Thought i'd take the rig out for a nice trip this weekend, only to meet with near disaster, engine tilted up stuck, strong current, waves, rocks, near death experience! My problem is this, the tilt/trim will go up, but gets stuck there, and wont go down; when I hit the down switch, you can hear a click on the motor, but nothing; after sitting for several minutes, it will sporadically work, i.e. go down a few inches then stop; does this sound like the switch going bad, or the motor itself, as it works great going up ? Please help !!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, it is a 1988 Nissan 70 hp, not sure if that is the manufactured of the tilt/trim as well

Re: Help Me !!!!!! Weekend Disaster

The click would be the solenoid turning on the trim motor, do you hear the trim motor spinning? Should be quite noisy when it's running. If it doesn't do that, check the voltage on the connectors on the trim motor and make sure it is not a loose/corroded wire problem (should be 12v of course). Also to be sure check the voltage right before and after the solenoid (should be the same, of course only if the trim is engaged). If it works sporadically, it's probably a wiring issue.

If the motor is spinning but the engine is not trimming down, that's weird :) Engine is quite heavy and should push down hard, so the hydraulics (or similar) mechanism inside the trim unit are clogged? Or stuck in some way. Or the motor is not driving the trim properly. Get back to use on wether the trim motor spins at all.

Re: Help Me !!!!!! Weekend Disaster

By the way, there should be 3 wires going to the trim unit from the solenoid.

Black is ground.
Blue is trim-up (towards the sky=blue :)
Green is trim-down (towards the land=green :)

If it trims up fine, and down sporadically, it's most likely wiring, and since the solenoid does click, it's between the battery-solenoid or solenoid-trim motor.

I think the coloured wires are pretty universal for trims, but if you have a different type, sorry!
