Hi all I have a 70hp mercury outboard it was running rough in the driveway. I turned it off and came out in the morning and everything is melted. trigger/cdi are melted and burnt spots on the stator. What would cause something like this??? I don't want to replace parts to have this happen again...

What year motor is it that you are working on? The only way that it could have happened is if some where the + from the battery was not turned off by the switch or it fed back thru a bad componet recitifier/switchbox/wireing harness to the ground of the battery. Being it was running bad before you shut it off, the damage was all ready started and just contued from there. you will have to start at the batery and check/test all the wires, and electical parts inorder to find the trouble maker.
