I called Mercury Marine by phone today trying to identify a Mariner 150 V6 that in thinking about buying. I gave them the serial number, it is 5316614, even went and double checked to make sure it was correct. I was told that they have no record of that serial number ever being built. Well, I know it is correct, has the factory serial number plate on it.
So looks like maybe i better pass on this one, How would I ever get the right parts for it if they don't claim building it, lol
Thanks for listening, hope someone can help

Take the port cowling off and look behind spark arm for date code. All Merc V-6's have this stamped into them up to 2002 that I know off. The date is in the red circle in picture below..

This certainly is a strange one. The serial number sequence puts it somewhere around 1979 but I have checked 6 different list and cannot find it.

Re: Help! Mercury Marine says my motor don't exist

It's a first year 2 liter 1979 150 HP. Starting number was 5129490 in 79 and starting number was 5503247 in 1980, back then on start up of a new model the serial numbers did not run consecutively but were numbered in groups so the competitors could not know how many were really built in a year. Then in 1981 the starting serial numbers were the same as 1980 because the factory and dealers carrier so many engines over and did not want to have to sell them as previous years engine just as they do now with there model system to obscure the build date.

Laddies..... Some system, have to love it when companies try and fool each other, just leaves us consumers ....lost in the wilderness.

Hi Bob, things have been fairly busy on this side of the equator, never seem to get a spare minute to myself. I have not been online because of the iboats block but that is fixed now (hopefully permanently).

How are things in your neck of the woods? Hunting season yet?

Everthing is good up here other than the weather and the summer was cold, I hope your not in for that, as we lost most of the home gardens in our area the just didn't make it before the first frost. Two of my boys just missed the D stock outboard marathon national championship and took 2nd and third, deer hunting is just around the corner and am looking forward to that, I can't get around good enough to small game hunt anymore. Glad to here all is well in your area. Bob

Back to the serial number. If a punch is slanted when struck, 8's turn into 3's. A mis-struck 0 and a nick turns into a 6 or a 9. Look it over close and drop in any possible changes. One of them will drop into the system at mercury parts express.

hope it helps

Mercury Parts Express doesn't support anything built before the mid 80's. My last '86 inline-6 didn't exist to Mercury, either.
