I have access to this ancient MontgomeryWard 3 HP outboard motor that actually runs and would work great with a small jon boat. One problem ...there seems to be a missing part at the prop.Like a small bearing washer or something. The prop actually has some space to slide on the drive shaft and it becomes disengaged when it slides to a certain point. Now this little motor has no gears....it just goes.No nuetral or reverse, the prop is always engaged.Just an old *** motor i guess but it runs.Any ideas on how to fix this thing?I would think finding parts would be about impossible.

its a montgomery ward mod# 94gg9009a
serial # 314092 3 HP @ 4,000 rpm's

That's a '49 Gale built 3hp, based off the old Elto. Can you identify from this picture what's missing:

HMmmm..wonder if i can post pics on this site?

If i remove the cotter key and nut from the end of the shaft the next immediate part would be the prop from there no other part can come freely.I would have to remove what i think is part 550667 to get anything else away from the drive shaft.Do you know if a shear pin was used in this outboard engine?I do see a hole in the prop its self but i havnt looked closely at the shaft to see if there is a hole there or not.

It ought to have one. I think that's 29-210 in the picture. I'll try to find dimentions.

I was thinking that the 29-210 would be the cotter key that goes along with 550680....or the nut at the end of the drive shaft.I could be wrong though and hopefully i am.It would be nice to just replace a shear pin.
BTW...i appreciate the help thus far. :)

No problem at all. I like tracking down this old stuff since it makes me learn something. :)
Ah, I think you'll find 53-275 is the cotter pin. There's an order there of sorts going like a backwards 'L'. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the pin should be 3/16" diameter by 15/16" long brass. It ought to go through the prop-nut end of the prop (aft).

I could be completely wrong about this since that's a picture of a '51-53 Gale there. But I'll bet they're the same since OMC used shear pins way back. Johnson used them years before, but I don't think Evinrude used them much until they joined forces.
(PS - the weird part numbers with the hyphens are old Johnson part numbers from before OMC was formed)

PPS - to post a picture you have to first host it at a third party's website like tinypic.com or xs.to . Then post a link to it or use the 'Image' button to include it. If that's all Greek to you you can email it to me and I'll post it for you. paul.moir@ns.sympatico.ca .

I agree. Now that i look more closely to that diagram the 53-275 would be the shear pin After looking at the prop again i see that would be the missing part.Looks like an easy fix to me.Thanks for the help.Im off to find a pin and then to the lake to do some fishing.Great day for it here on Oneida lake. :)
