I own a1998 Merc 150 .Oil injected 6 cyl. I replaced the trim pump last season and the switch on the throttle. Last weekend when preparing to retrieve my boat on the trailer I was unable to raise the motor. I used the trim switch on the motor and the throttle during the day without any problems. I installed a new sending unit today but the motor still wont rise. I tested the new unit by connecting the unit directly to a battery and the slotted key way did not spin. Could the new unit be defective? Am I missing something? Please help.

Have you checked the fluid level?

Check for proper ground or go with a jumper directly to the unit. that will take out any variables in the wiring. if it runs work your way back from there.

Re: Help-Motor won't go up

you have relays on that engine

do u hear clicking when pushing the trim button
do u try at the controls and try at the motor?

it is not fluid

could be, relay or switches or wire connections

u need to ground the motor to get it to work, which the relays ground through each other to work

Re: Help-Motor won't go up

Worked on the motor today. Turned on the battery switch and pushed the trim switch. Presto, the trim pump works. I did not do anything to repair the problem. I found out from the dealer that sometimes in the cold temps. the relays do not work correctly. Or they could be failing and working intremittently. The part I replaced was the sending unit for the trim guage on the console. This has nothing to do with the pump not working. I also found out that the relays work in tandem, therefore if one fails the other will not work. As per some archived forums switching one to the other will not correct the problem of the trim operating in only one direction. An easy way to check for pump failure is to power the pump directly. Own my 150 there is a geen and a blue wire coming form the pump. Power and ground either wires and if the pump does not operate then the pump is bad. Thanks for the replies. I guess I will replace both relays and hope for the best.
