Ok, thanks to some helpful forum members I was able to correct my shift linkage and now want to move on to the next issue at hand.
My 1983 Chrysler 50hp, model #507H3D, is an abolute bear to steer. PO installed new steering cables, but it didn't help. I've verified that it's not a cabling issue by removing the cable attachment pin and tried turning the enging at the transom, and that's actually harder. I have found one grease point about halfway up the middle of the center pin portion of the motor. I finally got old gook out of the way and pumped about 10 times on my trustly little $10.00 grease gun. On pump #9, some grease came out of the bottom and on the 10th, it came out as quick as I was putting in so I assumed it was full. The grease that came out was black, but still seemed pliable. Does the viscosity of this stuff break down?
Questions are; 1)could I have put too much grease in there, and if so, how would I go about removing it? 2)is there a hidden spot that I need to focus my lubricating efforts on? 3)any other tips or suggestions for loosening up the whole thing?
I'm new to this whole maintenance/repair idea, so please bear with me. I don't have a way to remove the engine from the boat (due to weight), so I'm hoping there's a way to work on this connected to the transom. Is there a way to get all the grease out and start over and if so, how does one know when he's done?
Thanks so much in advance and I'm feeling pretty confident right now since I've progressed into 1983 Chrysler 50hp Outboard Shift Linkage Specialist mode!
