 :(
Subject: 9.5 Evenrude Choking & Smoking??

I have a 9.5 evenrude runs great while cover is off. When I put the cover on it starts smoking very bad & has a bad miss in the engine , take the cover off & then runs fine. the man I bought the motor from changed the fuel pump, head gasket, water pump . the spark plugs are the short ones and pistons hit them unless i put a washer behind them, putting a washer stops piston from hitting them . I found another man with the exact problem with the cover . I though it could be not enough air so I drilled a lot of holes in the top & a large 2 inch hole in side by carb. & still does the same thing . Can Anyone help me...

I dont know alot about outboards, but I remembered reading a similar problem. Here is the link to the thread:

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=001848

dont know if I copied that in here so it is clickable or not (I'm new to all this) but you might also try a search for something like 'with cover on' and browes through those to see if you can find any useful suggestions.

Your problem is usually caused by an exhaust leak.
Dont know exactly where but look under the cover near the back of the motor probably where the powerhead joins the lower unit.

One of your plug wires may be cracked or broken. When you put the cover on it could be arcing.

1) You need a new gasket that fits between the power head and the lower unit. Buy a manual for your engine. The job is not as hard as it is time consuming...about 3 hours for a novice w/all parts on hand. Keep up with all the parts you remove to insure a hassle free re-assembly.

2) If you use the proper plugs, they come with a metal compression gasket that should properly space the plugs in the cylinder head. If you are using the correct plugs (Champion J4C or Autolite 353) with the compression gasket that comes with them, and the pistons are still hitting them, then you have serious internal problems (rod and/or main bearings) that must be addressed ASAP.

Very common on a 9.5. The large rubber seal on the midsection is bad (leaking) thus letting exhaust back up into the powerhead area. To repalce it you must disassemble the motor almost completely. We have done this; spray some foam down aroung the rubber grommet.

Good luck!

Thats correct, the exhaust is go the path of lest resistance, into the engine cover insted of under water.
