If you can see light coming through from the inside, that is definately a problem. Though, You can go down to your local hardware store and get a fiberglass repair kit and that will have everything you'll need.

I'd say so. Fix that before you go out again!

I assume its a new boat? How did the seller explain it?

Looks like the boat was dragged along the rocks or you have serous trailer set-up issues.

Also, interesting screen name you're using....

No, it is not "new". I have been in possession of this boat for a few years now. Started noticing water coming in last season. If anybody made that damage it must have been me :) Just looked underneath today and that was what i saw.

Re: HELP, my boat is taking in water!

That looks like the result of repeated beaching of the boat over time. I wouldn't expoect so many random scratches if it were hitting the trailer. I'd expect that kind of marking to be a bit more consistant and isolated. The scratches move away from the keel , but somewhat randomly as would small rocks, stone etc. as the keel parts them as it digs into the dirt. It looks like you've worn the gelcoat away and are down to fiberglass. I doubt that would cause appreciable water to intrude into the boat and collect in the bilge. The fiberglass and resin will be pretty thick along the keel.

This is not great and should be rectified. I would use a keel guard if I wanted tobeach the boat on a regular basis. I'd keep looking for the water intrusion.

How much water over what kind of time?

I didn't realize it was the keel. Still, the photos look like there are holes, and it's my understanding that you can get significant water in through the mat, especially when the water is under pressure--like driving through it.

I'm also surprised you "just noticed" damage as significant as that. If that's not the leak, who knows what else you've overlooked.

what kind of boat? how is it powered? how much water and under what circumstances?

I was on the water yesterday and would say my bilge was kicking in once every 10 minutes and would empty at least a gallon or so. A lot of water i would say.
As far as circumstances, just a normal nice and sunny fishing day

Re: HELP, my boat is taking in water!

well, I got the boat from a friend four years ago. I wast looking for damages at that time. As I said, I just noticed significant amounts of water coming in at the end of last season. The beaching damages are definitely not from me. As I look at that keel scratch, it doesn't look to me like deep enough to let the water in. And, as I said earlier, it must have been there ever since I took the boat. Looking over the complete bottom, I didn't see any other holes.
The boat is a bayliner capry.
I am really puzzled with this amount of water all of a sudden .

Put the boat in the water and examine the entire area around the transom to find the source of a gallon of water every 10 minutes- it should be pretty obvious.

I know, it should be. Right? The thing is that the bilge on this boat is positioned much lower than the ski locker and if it was filling up from the transom side the bilge pump would pick it up long before it made it's way up into the ski locker. My ski locker is 1/3 of the way full! From there, water goes down to the bilge and than pump takes it out.

Yikes! That is not normal, I would figure out where that water is coming from before you head out into the lake again.

When the boat is on the trailer put water in the bilge and see if you can see where it is coming out.

Beyond words if you have just now noticed this damage. This is where your water is coming in.
Go to the restoration forum and search you will get a list of products you can purchase to fix this.
Now get a fine tooth comb and a good digital camera and look over every cm of that boat.

is the bow eye tight? sealant? thru hull fittings? is this a ib/ob ? if so is it coming in around the outdrive? if outboard, bolts tight and sealed?

Looks like it is rubbing on the trailer crossmember. Get someone to watch the next time you pull it up on the trailer.

put in the plug.

Tilt the bow down.

Now fill the boat with water as full as you can without ruining seats & stuff.

See where it leaks OUT from.

Yes, it's that easy. And don't be surprised when you find water coming out of the keel...

Thanks for all the responses guys, I will start to inquire tomorrow. I am just confused about the amounts of water coming in this season and not the previous few.

Looking at pic #2, the keel looks really close to the front crossmember. On mine, when angled on the ramp and the boat enter or exit the trailer, the front part of the keel hit the trailer crossmember before the bunks lift it enough to clear. Solved it by adding a keel roller on that front crossmember.

I agree that the keel is rubbing on the trailer crossmember. Get the damage repaired and install a keel roller.
