i have a tracker pro-18 with a mariner 60 0n it. the rpm is supposed to be between 5000-5500. it is between 5100 and 5200 and it has a 13 pitch prop on it. ive always heard that you should get your rpm at the max. so if i lower the pitch from 13 to 11 it will raise my rpm and increase my hole shot. but, will the increase in rpm and the lowering of the pitch increase the top end speed or will it lower it or will it stay the same?????? someone please tell me what this decrease in pitch and increase in rpm will do to my top end speed because im buying a stainless steel prop for it. i understand the lowering and raising of pitch does but in my situation here what will it do to my top end speed, thass my biggest concern of all, i want the most speed that i can get.

Paul - While you wait for our prop experts to respond to this stop by the red Search at the top of the page and enter "prop" or something simular. There were over 300 prior posts on "prop."

It sounds like you are in your "sweet spot". A lower pitch prop will give you a better hole shot and higher top end RPM but your speed will suffer a bit.

Sounds like you are within the RPM limit already.....Remember that for every 1" of pitch change, there is a 200 RPM difference. So, if you change from a 13 to an 11, you should be running around 5500 RPM, which is the MAX RPM you should run. I'd stay with the 13, you'll be easier on the engine.

Paulbwhite;

If you lower the pitch the RPMs will go up but you would likely loose speed. It is like running arround town in first gear.

You will also tunr the engine more per mial and increase your fuel consumption.

As for a Stainless Stell prop - I doubt that you will notice much difference given the size of the engine. I would guess that the top speed now is about 30 to 33MPH, and don't think you would get more than one MPH from a SS prop over a good aluminium prop such as Turningpoint.
