Help! Need an Amp!

I'm trying to get my dads 1972, 85 Johnson running(no fire) and after following the TSing steps it looks like the Amp is bad. I have been pricing them and the cheapest I can find is $200+. He can't afford that (retired fixed income) and I don't think the old motor is worth that much. Does anyone know where to find a CHEAP one, maybe even a good used one will work. Thanks in advance.

I have really learned alot from reading yalls posts.

Re: Help! Need an Amp!

try ebay, a 72 engine is not old. if maintained, it's just broken in good, there are a lot of us here running '50ish engines regularly. and when you start looking at the cost to replace it, it looks newer.

Re: Help! Need an Amp!

Thanks F R, I just e-mailed them both.
And Tashasdaddy, this one really wasn't taken care of, but I am trying to fix it back up for my dad. I just hope it still has a couple good years left in it.

Thanx again for yalls help.

Re: Help! Need an Amp!

Hey guys, got dads 72' 85hp Johnson up and running. Had to remove a head and broken off head bolts(long story involving dads dingbat wife) to remove a WD-40 straw. Removed and cleaned carbs, troubleshot ignition and found a bad Amp. Located a new Amp at an affordable price with yalls help. Freed up frozen steering and throttle cables. Hit the key and she lit right off and runs like a champ on the trailer. Can't wait till next weekend to try her on the water.

Got a question though...
The motor is now hanging on a 16' alum boat. Not nearly as heavy as the 18' fiberglass it came off of. I know the prop pitch is probably too low for correct WOT RPM. Not worried that he will over-rev it as he isn't a speed demon. I was thinking I could just limit WOT with the adjustable stop and leave the smaller pitch prop on as he likes to troll real slow when fishing. My question is... if he never opens her up will this cause a carbon or coking problem? I've heard that 2 strokes like to run and don't like to idle very much.. it causes problems. What are yalls thoughts on this?

Re: Help! Need an Amp!

it should work, it may load up just work out the idle so it will troll, use seafoam additive also with oil gas mix, and do a yearly decarb with seafoam deep creep. if you haven't use deep creep on it. i suggest you do it now. it will smoke like a fat pine wood house on fire, but thats the carbon burning off the guts. then take it out an run hell out of it.

You sure that 85 horse isn't too much motor for that boat?...just a thought... that motor probably weighs about 270 lbs.

You mean you have run it dry? Unless you are lucky you have wrecked the water pump impeller. Keep your fingers crossed but if it overheats you will know what you will have to look at next.

In view of its history it's probably worth changing it anyway!
