I need help refilling the trim fluid reservoir on a 1984 mercury 150hp blackmax.

i believe all the fluid has drained out there was a plug on the side of the pump, i removed it and all the fluid ran out! the motor was all the way down
(i know a mistake).

so how do i fill this thing back up?!!

Thanks!

As you found out, the filler plug must only be removed when the engine is tilted up. You will have to open the relief valve on the Stbd side of the tilt pump and manually lift the engine up. Flip the safety catch on to hold it up. Now you can fill the reservoir and re insert the fill plug. You will have to tilt it all the way up with the pump and down again to chase the air out. dont forget to close the relief valve after you have the engine up and the safety catch on.

Are you saying fluid wont go down in the reservoir? Put what you can in it, Put the fill cap back on and screw in the relief valve. Let the motor down, loosen the relief valve lift the motor back up and let it rest on the safety catch, Then try to put more in the reservoir.

No it will not go in the reservoir.

Is the relief valve right above the fill cap? if so, this was plastic and wouldnt come out so now its broke!

i read somewhere else to trim the motor up while filling and when full quickly put the cap on, tried this and it didnt work either.

My relief valve is located on the right hand lower side of the unit, The fill reservoir is located on the top left hand side on top of a spout/tube. Yes you need to fill the tilt/trim while the motor is in the raised position.
