You disconnect the shift linkage under the powerhead. To remove the powerhead, remove the mounting screws, then pull off the engine. If it's not coming free, the driveshaft may be stuck in the crankshaft. Patiance, persuasion and penetrating oil is the answer.
The lower crankshaft seal is mounted on the driveshaft with a spring, etc. If it all falls off, the order is metal cup, spring, black cup thing, o-ring, washer, cork thing.
The driveshaft may be needed to be turned a little to get the L/U to drop. There's a little pin through it to hold the crankshaft seal up.
Hope this helps!

Whoa hold up a minute, I don't know this particular engine but I don't think you need to remove the powerhead to replace the impeller. As in most outboards big and small, the impeller sits atop the lower unit with the driveshaft running through it. Remove the lower unit bolts, disconnect the shift linkage, and slide the lower unit down and out from under the power head/middle unit. Remove the water pump housing bolts, and replace the rubber impeller inside, making sure the vanes point in the proper direction. Installation is the reverse.

I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong, I just don't want this guy to pull his powerhead if it isn't necessary. What kind of engine is this anyway?

CD-12 is mentioned in the title. That's a '55 5.5hp Johnson.
It's an unfortunate fact that you do have to pull off the powerhead in order to disconnect the shift linkage on these engines. The same era 7.5s are the same way. They changed the design (according to my manual) in '65, but by then it was either a 5hp or 6hp engine.
Put '5.5 powerhead impeller' into the search and see what you find. There's lots of good info there.
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=007275
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=004377
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=012387
