Help needed please

Hi just joined the forum, and in need of some help

Purchased a sea ray 185 moaco late last year with mercrusier 165 engine put the boat in the water and every time I put it in gear i.e forwards or reverse it stalled looking though other threds seems likly to be the shift cable, is this job i can do my self or does it need to be done by a macanic if so how much if I can do it my self is there a kit ect sorry for so many questions.
All help will be apreciated.

Welcome aboard !

Yep lower cable alright. Go to the " Adults only " at the top of the forum and D/L You manual for free thanks to Don s who put them there.

Cable i would get merc oem Don s also said they are the best, and has a inner coating far superior to after market, and you can get one at:

Ayuh,... If you're at All, Handy,... You should be able to DIY it...

You'll also want to consider swapping out All of the Rubber parts in there, as Deep as you gotta Go...

Would this "Mercruiser 165" be a 6 or 4 cylinder engine, and what year?

Sorry it is a 165 4 cylinder I belive the year to be around 1987

Head up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum and download 2 manuals. Manual #6 is for the outdrive which includes details on replacing the shift cable.
manual #8 covers your engine.
