I have a 1998 30 hp Johnson motor. I was taking off the lower unit and when I disconnected the water pump I noticed that the gasket was cracked and flaking off. Should I replace the gasket or get a whole new water pump. Also after I put it back together and when I turn the propeller by hand I can hear the pump rubbing on the drive shaft. What should I do????????????????????????????????

Thanks

Nick

Ahoy, Nick.

Replace the gasket. I think the rubbing you hear is the result of the failed gasket and is the impeller rubbing against the water pump housing, rather than the drive shaft.

We use less memory and time if we leave out "need help" and extra punctuation on posts. When you post we know you need help.

Good luck. :)

Thanks, but can I just replace the gasket or do I have to buy a water pump kit?

I replaced the waterpump of my 30hp the other day.
I changed the whole thing, because the efforts probably to take off the lower unit for a second time make the costs of a complete repair kit worth.

Nordy

You can buy just the gasket, after the impeller/pump is installed, only turn drive shaft in direction engine runs. You did put the impeller key back in right?

I bolted the water pump back on with the old gasket for the time being, but what is the impeller key?
