i am currently experiencing a problem with the lower vertical shaft which slots into the lower gear casing. I need to know how far down the shaft sits as it should be sealing and preventing water from entering the lower oil res but alas it is not. The metal cylinder on the shaft doesnt seem to be sealing. Also. . . Does anyone have experience of the longer pre 77 stringer drive ? The manual shows the shaft. Impeller housing and a few other bits to be quite different to mine. Thanks in advance.

The Impeller housings from 1968-1977 are quite similar. There are two distinct differences though. The impeller housing used on a V6 or V8 engine is longer. (taller) then the one used on a 4 cylinder engine. There are OEM manuals for each OMC model year drive that will show the somewhat small differences between them. Pictures of the outdrive, prior to disassembling and a picture of the boot on the back of the boat will help to narrow the year model year of the outdrive you have. The serial number of the hull of the boat can be used to help narrow the year of the outdrive also. The exhaust housing changed a bit in appearance between 1968-1977.
