Hello all! New to the boating world. Slightly mechanically inclined. Pretty good at taking things apart and T-R-O-U-B-L-E shooting. But when it comes to the Inards of a motor especially marine. I’m lost. Just got for free a little over a month ago a 1988 Barretta success. Aq131D 270 outdrive.
replaced oil in outdrive. Replaced both bellows and outer cooling hose. Replaced engine oil. New filter. New plugs. New V belt. New battery. Fuel pump. Fuel filter. Cleaned and replaced seals and gaskets on carb. New starter. Sucked out old fuel. And put in fresh fuel. Starts up just fine. Almost perfect. Idles fine. Will run at an idle without an issue. Gets up to temp. And stays at 180. Oil pressure shows between 50-80 depending on load on the engine. Had the boat out three times in the local lake putting around learning how everything works and making sure everything works. All 3 times I had it out I had no issues. Thought everything was good to go. Started to cruise around a little faster around the lake. My third time out I was cruising around 25-30mph. All of a sudden huge surge in power. Boat died out. White oil smelled smoke rose from the water. Boat stayed running. At an idle and a slow crawl everything seemed normal. But once again trying to accelerate. It bogs and blows the smoke. Took it in for the day. Took it home. Oil was still fresh looking. No water. Not black. Not milky. Looked in oil cap. No milky. Coolant is still clear and green. Noticed aloooot of oil out of crank case breather hose. All over my carb and splashed down the motor. Cleaned up all the oil. Tried to run it today with ear muffs. Starts fine. Idles. All gauges read as they should. Put a load on the motor. And it stalled. White smoke. Oil all over the carb. Trying to figure out if something is clogged? Stuck valve. Piston rings? Grand father is coming with a compression tester on Tuesday. But any insight to do some more trouble shooting would be awesome. Thanks!!!
