I just got a 1961 5.5 HP Evinrude. I just rebuilt the carb and it now runs well. However, there is a gasket that is leaking water. I know it has someing to do with the cooling system. I just need to Idenitfy what gasket this is. Please see the photos.

thermostat housing? that's my best guess since it's not on the cylinder head

just curious is that photo taken looking at the rear of motor, and that's part of cylinder head in lower right corner? that photo's a little too closeup for me to be sure, I don't have any diagrams of motor that old

Yep....t-stat housing cover gasket. Looks like someone "homemade" one. Sets right on top of the head. Ya' might pull the cover and see if the t-stat is still there if the engine won't warm up.

Thanks guys I really appreciated. The engine seems to be running fine, but it is obvious that this gasket is not good with all the water that comes out it.

Hi EB,
I would do as OBJ suggested and check to see if the T-stat is present. If your motor runs good now, it'll run even better with a good T-stat.... Make sure you're running that oldster on a steady diet of 24:1 fuel mix.

- Scott
