HELP! New Topside Paint dries Dull and Shiny

We bought an unopened can of Awl Grip linear polyurethane topcoat (oyster white) from a guy who had "had it awhile." We had it tinted at the local hardware store. We mixed it with Awl-Cat #2 according to the directions for rolling. When it dried, it is super shiny in some spots and unbelieveably dull in others. What happened? By the way, we sanded the topside uniformly. Also, we only mixed up little batches at a time, and application from the same roller pan mix would dry both shiny and dull.

Any ideas? Please?

Others will chime in, but I'm gonna guess an incompatible tint?

I don't think you can just tint marine poly like that using hardware store pigments... I think it would have to be pigments approved by the manufacturer, if at all?

With old paint it could be many things. The tints may be the first problem, the carriers (the liquid) used in for these pigments may not be compatible with your paint, the pigment itself can be incompatible also.

If the surface under the paint is different in some areas, as in sanded differently, more or less porous, some chalky gel coat left on the surface, or over rolling, paint too old, not mixing the paint well enough, filler under the paint not sealed, plus other things.
