HELP.. No forward or reverse. 87 merc I/O

I start the engine but when I put into gear..... nothing
I was on the water when it happened had just run the boat 5 miles
with no problems... I stopped for a good looking fishing spot and when I
tried to move I had no forward or reverse.....
Engine sounds ok just no propulsion..

Please Help, Haven't been on the water in 9 months !!!!

the same thing happen to me this morning as well. i have an 86 mercury 50 except when i push the throttle i crawl. when i try to give it some more it sounds like it revving high but no move. took me almost three hours to get to port which orignally took me about 10 minutes to get to. any suggestions?

Spacerust, sounds like you spun the hub in your prop. Take it off and go to a prop shop and get a new hub.

edm, Could be the prop hub, engine coupler, or even the outdrive itself.
Did you have an overheat? smell any rubber burning, will the prop turn at all?

Spacerust, you have a spun prop.

edmesser. check your shift cable, sounds like it snapped. If your prop is spinning, then you may have done what spacerust did, spun the hub in your prop.

didn't smell anything, I lifted the engine cover and no smell.
the prop turns barely with no propulsion.

i believe i checked the cables, and they looked fine,
is there somewhere I can find visual of the hub?

With the engine NOT RUNNING, put it in forward gear and see if you can turn the prop counter clock wise. It should just catch the dog clutch and stop. If it doesn't stop, look at the prop shaft, is it stationary. If it's turning also then you have a drive or coupler problem. Just keep turning the prop counter clockwise and have someone look inside the boat where the shaft goes into the coupler. if the shaft is turning, you lost the splines in the coupler. If nothng is moving, then the drive has problems.

Thanks DON This was by far the best info I have found on checking the probelm out.
When the snow stops flying here in Vermont I will do all of those things.
However, if it is the spun hub, is this something I can repair or do I need to
go to a repair shop?
If it is something I can repair any advice on where I can get some info on doing the repair?

Depends on the prop......
Most likely you will need a prop shop,though....​
