help no shifting

a young man at work bought this 2002 byliner capri it has a 3.0l alpha 1
he has nothing but problems with it, and is getting frustrated.lol.boat life.lol.
anyway he told me it won't go into gears i told him he spun a hub but thats not it.when he goes to shift it in forward or reverse none of the shifter cables are moving on the engine.the shifter moves but nothing where there hooked up on engine.any help thankful.phil.

Alpha outdrives have two shift cables. One that runs from the boat controls to the shift interrupt switch at the motor and one that runs from the shift interrupt switch to the outdrive shift mechanism. Since the lower shift cable runs thru a rubber boot, and these do not last forever, that can get corroded and not move.

Of course the trouble could be at the boat control as well. You need to investigate.
