Re: HELP! no spark on my 4 hp

I think that should probabaly be BJ4DRHESR (A D in the middle there not a B)

Making it a Belgium made Johnson 4hp Deluxe with rope starting and remote fuel tank, and standard (15") shaft made 1990.

It has breakerless ignition so no breaker to worry about but check the plugs.

Best thing is to follow the advice in the thread "Awakening a sleeping outboard" on the Engine FAQs board http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

Check the kill switch on the tiller end it could be shorted but the safety lanyard must be fitted in order to get sparks.

If not that then plugs, powerpack, bad connections loads of possibilities

Re: HELP! no spark on my 4 hp

I checked another list and found your number now. The numbers I've found for 1990 are
4BRES / 4BRLES 1990
4BRHES / 4BRHLES 1990
4RDHES / 4RDHLES 1990
4RES / 4RLES 1990

The BRP website only lists
J4RDHESR 1990 J4RDHLESR 1990
J4RESR 1990 J4RLESR 1990

I dont know what the B in the middle stands for. Its 1990 for sure though the ES indicates that but if it is a long shaft (20") then there ought to be an "L" in there

Even those versions that I have found that do not have safety lanyard still have a stop button on the tiller. Be absolutely certain there is not a kill switch somewhere even if it is operated by the throttle as a defective or shorted one will prevent it running

There appears to be two versions of this engine Some have the option of a saddle tank some dont. they have different style covers. One has top and bottom halves the other splits into left and right halves. Some seem to have 2 two separate HT coils others have them combined into one unit.

Re: HELP! no spark on my 4 hp

Looking at some of the other 4hp models i find some 1988 models had points ignition sytems. J4BRHCCS for example. that one had a slder type throttle control across the front. I still dont know if it was linked to stop contacts though.

Perhaps you should look at diagrams on the BRP parts website
http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e to see if you can match up what you have with any one of them. Look at the '88 ones as well. No chance that thats CC not CE I suppose.

Perhaps someone who can sort it all out will be along.

Hi Vic C
took fly wheel off today and exposed points, give them a good clean up cut ends of ht leads and reconected them back in boots.turned her over and you could see the spark half a mile away(engine started on the second pull)anyway thanks for your advise this is such a good site and i have recommended it to some of my friends.
Thanks again
