HELP!!! Old steering wheel wont come off.

HELP! I've got a teleflex helm with the tapered shaft, and the old wheel is frozen solid on the shaft. I've been beating on it with a hammer for about half an hour. Tried using a pry bar with no help. What can I do?

Twist the nut out flush with the end of the shaft. Put your knees behind the lower half of the wheel and apply outward pressure with your ankles. Pull outward with your left hand on the top of the wheel and rap the nut/shaft with a hammer with your right hand. Should pop off.
