I'm abut to install a rebuilt powerhead, so I went ahead and soaked the carbs and am currently in the process of rebuilding them using the proper kits.

I stumbled upon two problems:
1) The two screws that go into the face of a carb had these thick o-rings, the kit came with a red plastic replacement for this o-ring. The problem is that I'm having a problem getting the screw face to be flush with the carb surface. I've torqued the screw pretty tight. Do I need to take the o-ring out and trim it?

2) How do you secure the new plug (or whatever its called, it looks like a dime)? Does it take a special tool to hammer it in place. It looks like some kind of a die or stamp is used to tap the top of the plug so it spreads out agains the inner rim of the hole, therby securing it.

I've atempted to post pics, any help is appreciated.

The parts breakdown shows a washer teslaman. Hope the link shows up.

The "plug" your refering to is a core plug. Put it in the hole with the curve side up. Using a flat punch, the closer to the diameter of the core plug the better, tap the plug flat. I usually will cover the plug with a coat of gasket sealing compound. The service manual will say to coat the edges of the plug before putting it into the hole. Be careful not to over do the tapping and cave the plug inward.

Your pics didn't make it either.

If you use the red plastic one that is keyed, you don't use the O-ring. If you use the red plastic one, seat it all the way in before you put the screw in. If you can't get them in, use the o-rings instead.

You need a sealer - originally it was sealer 1000, try part # 0200763 for OMC Gasiola.- applied to the edge of the core plug. Then replace it rounded side up and facing you. You strike the center with a flat ended punch until the plug lies flat.

Thanks for the help, what kind of gasket sealing compund should I use?

Yes, the red plastic washer with the key. I did exactly what you said and the screw face is about 1/16" above the carb surface. The old washer was thicker than an o-ring, so I think the using an o-ring may not work. Maybe if I remove the red washer and trim on side using a knife I could get the screw flush.

Most of the gaskets had holes cut to accommodate those bolts.

The air silencer base soulld have holes there that are large enough to accommodate.
