bought used 99 Volvo 5.0GL. Previous owner had new block put in but did not use the original dipstick that attaches under the pan. Instead used automotive dipstick w/ zip ties.

Anyway, I have bought all the parts to install the correct dipstick under the oil pan. My question is, what is used to plug the hole on the side of the block that the automotive type dipstick went into? Your first question may be is it a marine block? My assumption is possibly because the automotive fuel mount is blocked internally meaning is was not meant to accept a cam driven fuel pump.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Clean the hole out nice and clean a use some oil resistant engine grade sillycone (like ultra black used on intake manifolds) to glue a bolt in the hole.

Ayuh,... It don't mean much,...

Replacement blocks today are shipped with dipstick holes on Both sides of the block....
There's little red plastic plugs used for shipping, work very well for running too...

The Sillyseal,+ a 1/4" bolt is a good workaround....

I drove a 1/4 inch wooden dowel into mine 4 years ago and have never looked back.

Your mechanic and mine must have went to the same school for idiots. If they zip tied the dip stick I would go over the motor with a fine tooth comb to make sure they did not hose anything else up. double check all bolts for proper torque and check all hoses and belts for proper fitment.
