At what speed does Structure Scan operate. I am considering a Lowrance to replace a Humminbird. For instance, Humminbird told me theirs operates ONLY between two and seven miles per hour. I would like to be able to cast and watch where the weed line is but I'm going slower than two miles per hour and the unit will not operate at this low speed. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Help on Lowrance structure scan

As with any sonar, it takes multiple snapshots and displays them side by side.
If you go extremely slow, all the snapshots look the same.
If you go too fast, each one is so different there is little relationship to the previous one.
You want each one to be different but with some overlap of the previous one.

High resolution, Narrow beams need to move slower.
Low resolution, Wide beams can go faster.

All recreational Side Imaging units will be happy at trolling speeds.
All Side Imaging Sonars "Work" at all speeds.
Stopped and Planing are just going to be very difficult to interpret.
The Lowrance unit will have the same natural restriction that Humminbird has.

It is like making a movie of people walking through Mall.
At 1000 frame a second, no one moves very far between each frame. It almost looks like they are frozen.
At one frame per minute, each frame has a totally new set of characters. You can't tell where anyone went.
~24 frames per second makes for a natural looking movie.

Re: Help on Lowrance structure scan

Thank you. That is an incredible, precise answer to my question. I have not upgraded since my Lowrance x70 which still works! I troll more now than I ever have and hope this ( 898c HD SI) can help the catch rate.
