Help! On vacation ! 1970 115 pulse pack

I got this motor about 3 years ago, and had to replace pulse pack after just a few hours use. I replaced with CDI pulse pack # 113-8362. Also replaced rectifier & coil. Now it's blown again (it wouldn't start, and pulse pack was literally smoking). Last time I had the luxury of time to research problem. Right now I don't - I'm on vacation, at the lake!
I know the answers are there if I searched enough, but, as I said I'm on vacation, and time is of the essence.
Before I order another $300+ pulse pack, what should I check? Is there a way to check rectifer? Or should I just order one?
Could a bad diode cause this? I forget how to check it...zero ohms one direction, infinity the other...right? on the yellow wires, right?
HELP!

Thanks Thanks Thanks!

If the pulse pack was smoking, I dont see a chance of getting it running. I have never seen smoke come from one of these pack's. but if it did, you have more problem's that just the pack. If you are like me, your on vacation with minium tool's. Let the kid's fix it , grab a beer, and a book, and go sit on the dock.

Well, something was smoking...it may have been the rectifier, but pulse pack was hot.
Giving up on motor at this point, with virtually all of my two weeks vacation at lake in front of me, is not an option. I have some tools with me, including a multimeter (certainly enough to change pusle pack & rectifier). I intend to prevail.

Anyone else have any input?

That truly is a miserable thing to have happen. I can't think of anything to help at this point. Is there possibly a dealer ship, or a mechanic close at hand. Possibly a mechanic that could help in his off hour's.

Coil terminal (where blue lead from pulse pack attaches) measures a dead short to ground. That can't be right, can it?
