Help on year without S/N

Hey everyone I originally posted this message about a mercury 900 bogging down real bad. Here
Well, I am at it again. I will hopefully have the results of a compression test within a couple of days, which I will post as soon as I have. So my question today is: is there any way that I can find out the year of this motor without having the S/N. The last owner stripped and painted the lower unit and forgot to put the tag back on. I have this really bad feeling that everyone is going to tell me I am up a creek, but I have to try and figure it out. I was kind of thinking maybe a part number that I could reference or something along those lines. I have numerous pictures of the motor that I will gladly send out out to anyone that is willing to help. I am sorry this is so lengthy, but appreciate any and all help.

One other question. If we had ordered the wrong stator(wrong year), would the motor still start and run?

Thanks,
Dan

Do you not have a s/n on the block?

I found out roughly what year my ex-military merc 50 was (the UK military ones have no serial number at all-not even the recessed place on the block for a plug to sit) by buying a generic seloc manual and ID'ing the wiring diagram and components. That was enough to make finding spares possible.

Nos4r2, The motor is a mid eighties mercury 900 with an inline 6. Where on the block would I find the serial number?

Dan

Look for a recessed round aluminium disc with numbers stamped on it. It SHOULD be on the front of the motor (as it sits on the boat)between the carbs somewhere.
