Hi all,

I just bought a 1974 Sea Ray with a 302 and a mercruiser outdrive. It came needing a new shift cable and bellows. The guy that had it before me had the outdrive removed, left it in nuetral, left the shift cable unhooked in the outdrive, and re-installed the outdrive. Now I can't get it off for the life of me. I have been trying for three hours with no luck, and I am starting to tear up my bell housing. My shop manual says I must have it in forward gear, but how do I do that when the cable is unhooked??? If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Looking Up from the Front of the drive,
You can see whether the shift-shoe is "In-line" with the drive(fore,+ aft).......

Whatever you do, Don't Pry on the bellhousing casting...... It'll Leak......
Many times you can Lift the drive,+ Drop It.....
Causing it to Pop out......
If that doesn't work,
Sometimes you can Reattach the trim rams,+ Use them to Power the drive Off.......
Good Luck.......

Place a deep well socket between the top of the outdrive and the transom assy as a wedge while picking up on the foot. This will usually give you enough leverage to take of the stubborn drives.

I want to thank you for the advice. Placing the piece of wood between the upper part of the outdrive and the transom and raising the power trim did it. It started smashing the wood and then popped right off.
