My 2003 Trophy is overheating. I am hose testing this in my driveway as I just purchased this boat. She overheats at idle or in gear. This is a dry joint system. Also there is no water exiting the exhaust after reaching operating temperature. This is what I have done to date.
Check impeller. Looked fine/ Replaced anyway including tube o-rings etc.

Checked t-stat. Passed boiling water test/Replaced anyway. While I had the t-stat hsg. off, I checked the spring loaded check valve ball assy which seemed to move freely.

Removed starboard side manifold, spacer, and elbow. Water flow tested for obstructions./ None noted. Checked flapper operation./ Seems fine. Water flow tested with garden hose for obstructions./ None noted.

I am getting ready to remove the port side manifold today. I also check the spark plugs for water and found none. Compression also good. The motor seems to be running fine. Am I missing something simple here? Overheat issues on the dry-joint system are hard to find.

The water exiting has nothing to do with engine temp. water must always exit to cool the rubber components.as soon as you start the engine the pump is sending water into the system and out the exaust .

Thanks for clarifying the water exit issue. At no time does water exit the exhaust holes and yes, I did install the impeller key. After inspecting the port side manifolds, is it possible to verify water inlet passage?: At least up to the t-stat housing?

from pump thru coupler to copper tube, thru the drive out the hose at the transom to inside the boat, thru the power steering cooler to the T housing.
check you mesages

Re: Help! Overheat issue/4.3-alpha genll

Bt Doctur, I asked because I wonder if there may be a blockage in the rubber hose going from the transom inside of the boat to the t-stat hsg. Ideally I guess I can remove the outdrive again and run a garden hose from the inlet hole and see what, if anything, comes out of the hose connected to the t-stat hsg, or I can wait after reassembly and remove the inlet hose (at the t-stat hsg) while at idle and inspect same.?.?

FWIW. I also had some overheat problems and trouble shot everything you did, even put the water hose up in the inlet on back off the gimbal housing. WHen getting ready to put the outdrive back on and cleaning up the gasket surfaces, I noticed that inside the water inlet, upper inboard side there was a area about the size of my finger, A HOLE where it looks like cavitation wore through and that was where my lower unit pump had been pushing the water. Temporarly sealing the hole and now the temp gauge is right in the middle of the scale. This had been frustrating me for the longest time.

Was this visible from the inlet hole on the transom? I just removed the outdrive, flushed with a garden hose and no obstruction noted.

Barely, I had to get down and look up. I saw the depression and stuck my finger in there and found the hole. A heavy gauge wire confimed when pushed in and it came out under the bellows.
Hope this helps.

Unbelieveable!! .....and embarassing. After all this time, there was nothing wrong with the boat. There was a restriction inside the EARMUFFS!!!
