Last week the gasket between powerhead and lower unit had to be replaced (small leak).

Now I went out with the boat, started from the first time and ran nice untill after about 5 min. the overheat alarm went off.
Shut the engine down and waited 5 min, started again and proceeded at +/- 3000 rpm back to port but again alarm went, stoped again and waited for 5 min again.
then idled at around 1000rpm back to port without a problem.

All the time there was a strong stream comming out of the pee hole.
When I was home to flush the engine on the muffs I felt at the stream comming out of the pee hole and noticed that the temperature changed constantly. 2sec. warm water and then 2sec. cold water and so on..... ??

Anybody have a clue ?

It is a 99 johnson 90hp, new waterpump, thermostats already installed.
And there is no water leaking from between engine head an lower unit.

I am thinking of taking the stats out and run like that....

thanks

Re: help,

You could try running it without the stats to see if that cures it, but make sure you put good ones back in. Don't run without them permanently...

Re: help,

Two things come to mind :

your motor will run too cold without thermostats, and perform poor.

you need a method (wax stick, pyrometer or other) to be sure the warning horn is not a false signal.

DHP

The telltale discharge temp will vary as the thermostats open and close.

Re: help,

Sorry,I realize your warning horn works.

I was suggesting something is making it work when it shouldn't.

(hence false warning)
