Does anyone know what is involved in taking off the carb on a Johnson Sea horse1957 35 hp motor? Is that box on the front an airfilter? It looks like one but it looks like it has oil in it. Any info on this motor would be appreciated. Also taking off the flywheel is hard even though we got a harmonic puller it does not seem to be coming off. Thanks to advance.

Removing carburetor - Remove the choke and jet knobs. Remove the silencer (2 screws and it's not an air filter). Disconnect the battery and remove starter along with the bracket (3 small bolts and 1 large slot head bolt). You may have to remove the safety switch and bracket from the other side (3 small bolts I think). After that you should be able to get to the 2 nuts that hold the carb on.

There shouldn't be any oil in the silencer. Drain and clean it out.

To remove the flywheel, make sure you are using 3 grade 8 bolts rather than the bolts that came with the puller. Make sure they are evenly screwed in to the holes (about 3/4 inch) and begin tightening the big center bolt. When you tighten it until you arm quivers, have a bud pry up in the flywheel gently. Tap the center bolt on the flywheel puller. Don't hammer it, just tap it a little. If that doesn't work, apply a little penetrating oil to the joint and go have a beer, maybe 2, then repeat.

You asked in a PM the purpose of the safety switch. I choose to post here so all may read. Here's the explanation of why the switch is needed, from the Johnson Service Manual:

"Conditions under which the cut-out functions to limit maximum idling speed are as follows: If when running at fast idle in neutral (2000 RPM or more), the throttle is suddenly closed, a surge or sudden increase in manifold suction is introduced. Under influence of abnormal manifold suction in this instance, the fuel vapor mixture is not consistently ignited but will tend towards firing erratically (as combustible mixtures form*) to result in irregular but excessively “strong” power impulses to sharply increase motor RPM’s even though the throttle is closed – Resultant high motor speed (RPM’s) cannot under the circumstances be otherwise reduced or controlled by simply closing the throttle and since no manually operated ground switch is employed, other means are required – thus, the automatic cut-out..."

The switch itself, when excessive vacuum is applied, closes and shorts out the ignition on one cylinder, thereby slowing down the engine.

Have you been able to get the flywheel off yet?

To protect the threads on the crank leave the nut on loose. It has been my expierence that you have to whack the center bolt pretty good to get any results.Usually when you hit it you will here a diference in the tone in only one or 2 hits. Then tighten the center screw again as described hit the center screw again.Should pop loose. In my limited expierence about 50% of the time you have to wack the center bolt to get any results.
Occasionally the flywheel will pop by just tightening the screw.
