Help please... Need photo how to unhook shift shaft to drop 1988 88hp lower unit

Factory manual worthless . Need some help how to disconnect shift shaft so I can drop lower unit and service water pump

Look closely at the shift linkage on the starboard (right) side of the powerhead.... the heavy duty round elbow rod that leads into the retaining holes at the intake manifold.

See that heavy duty clevis pin there right at the entrance to the nylon bushing? Remove it... now push that elbow shift linkage to the other side of the engine which will disconnect it from the top hole of the lower unit shift rod.

Connecting it is just the opposite... line it up, then pull that rod back, insert that clevis pin. That's it.

Are you referring to the clip with round loop on the end? Remove the clip and push the dowel? Is it spring loaded ? Or do I need to be careful how far I push?

Remove the clip and push the shift arm to port. This disconnects the upper shift linkage.

the clip is known as a R clip as that is what it looks like.
you cannot push it too far, and it will let the rod drop down like said above.
no need to remove any carbs or anything else.

when you do it you wont believe how simple it really is.
