The forward ratcheting is normal.-----Did you ensure that the lower unit was in neutral and control in neutral when you assembled it ?----Or lower unit in forward and control in forward when you assembled.----No guess work to be done here.

Glad you got the directions for alignment.

On proper rotation, engine off.

F gear prop resists turning CCW...if you twist hard enough you will cause the crankshaft to rotate. CW it ratchets which is the "over run" clutch functioning that's built into the shifter clutch dog on the prop shaft. Use is when you are decelerating and the prop is still turning at the water induced speed while the engine drops below that rpm say to idle as you come off plane. If it weren't for that when you chopped the throttle you would be "chomping on the windshield" as the boat would attempt to stop immediately.

N is no connection and spins freely both directions.

R is a cogged gear and no ratcheting is involved...usualy R speeds are so slow that it's not needed.

Sorry for the delay, just spotted this. When shifting into Reverse, always ensure that the engine is running or that you manually rotate the prop (by hand) as you move the lever "with the engine off" obviously....reason being you have to get these R cogs and slots to line up to allow the shifting cog to completely move aft. If you force it you can bend your linkage and R would non functional.
