Hi....

New to me 1978 15 HP Model #15854B.

Previous owner said wouldn't start...so he installed 2 new coils. Still no spark. He gave up and the motor is now mine.

One thing I notice: Coils installed are #582508. Parts sites seem to indicate they should be #584561...but it's ambiguous.

Do I have the wrong coils?

The other thing that might be a factor here: The engine **MIGHT** have originally been electric start. It has the dual gear flywheel, a rectifier and junction block....and the exhaust access has the starter motor mount. Would this alter the choice of coils?

Can anyone help?

Thanks, Chuck

Coil #584561 is the proper coil and it DOES NOT supersede up to #582508.

I don't know what the difference is between the two coils but 584561 is what the engine calls for.

Go to CDI Electronics .com. The have some good troubleshooting procedures there. You will need some test equipment.

As I posted in your other post, the parts breakdown does not show any difference in the ignition system for manual start and electric start.

Thanks everyone. I e-mailed CDI earlier today and received an almost instant response; both of those coils should work. When I asked why CDI manufactured two different ones and what was the difference between them.....the reply was "mounting preferences by the market".

And; guess what? I was taking the PO's word for it having no spark. I just finished testing it...and it has GREAT spark. So there :)
Trust but verify when it comes to what a PO tells you I guess.
