Hi, newbie to boats here, i purchased a sun tracker pontoon with an 02 Mercury 50 hp outboard, i redid all the boat intereior and just fired it up for the first time today, running a little bit on ear muffs, at first i didnt have water coming out pee hole but i finally realized there was sand plugging up just inside of the pee hole about an inch where the hose made a bend, anyways, i noticed a blown fuse thats located just above the cdi voltage regulator area, kind of above the idividual coil packs, its a 20 amp, but it was running fine, so i went ahead and replaced it. I noticed that where all the wires that come out of the cdi are bundled together all the clear plastic connectors were melted together, also up above near the fuse theres some more that are melted together, i got the all seperated so they cant touch and i noticed when running after just about 30 seconds u see a little smoke coming off of one of the yellow wires that goes into the cdi, if you touch it it is hot. Im assuming this eventually will blow the fuse and is probly why it was blown in the first place, do you think i need a new cdi? I cant see what else it would be, i thought maybe the stator could be putting out too many volts but my voltage gauge on the console doesnt work so i dont know if the voltage is correct or how to go about fixing the gauge. I have a seloc manual for the motor but it doesnt go into much detail on wires shorting out, Another thing i noticed is that when you turn the key to on the engine overheat alarm doesnt beep, but the book says to unhook the tan and blue wire that goes to the temp sensor and ground it out, i did this and it beeped like it said it should but it wont when i turn the key, should i be concerned about this or does me grounding it mean that the system should be working fine, sorry to ramble on but im pretty new to outboard motors, i work on small engines and chainsaws for a living so i can do most mechanical stuff myself but i need help when it comes to wiring, thanks for any help < Sam

Better get ahold of Mecury cust. service. You might have a motor under a secret recall for defective volt reg. Get it looked at on land or carry a fire extig. on the water (YOU WILL NEED IT) I had a 04 60 hp that caught fire at 40 hours.

Re: Help please with wiring smoking

After doing lots of research online and talking with a local marina i decided to purchase a new voltage regulator, i installed it this evening and fired the boat up, wire never got hot or smoked, got the volt gauge working too, it was just stuck, small tap on face of gauge and its working great. Gonna put her on the water for the first time tomorrow afternoon, Thanks, Sam
