I'm sure I've asked this before altho not like this. I need a new fuel pump for my '74 Rude 85 hp (model 85493B). I can't seem to find it online anywhere. I've contacted some local dealers and they say the correct part # for my pump has been "revised" 4 times. They don't even know if the "correct" part # is up to date. I have part # 0385784 which has superceded to part #0395712. Supposedly the O.E. # starts with "43....". I'm lost. I wonder if anyone knows the Sierra # or some way I can get the CORRECT part # and if anyone knows a reliable website I can order from that has it in stock. My local dealer says IF they can get a correct part #, it's gonna cost around $150.00 which seems very high to me for a plastic pump. If anyone can help me with a good part #, a good website to order from, etc... please PM me. Thanks

Re: Help? Please?

Fuel pump part number 385784 supersedes up to part number 0438559. It list somewhere between $50.00 and $60.00.

My last price book (2004) had it listed for $50.46.

Re: Help? Please?

it looks like part number 398514 is the rebuild kit for your fuel pump, and 438559 is the newest part number for the replacement pump, I checked NAPA's web page, they don't have the fuel pump, but they have the rebuild kit and their part number for it is SME 187821

Iboats shows the fuel pump kit as Sierra 18-7821 and iboats is the cheapest place to buy the rebuild kit, (under 20 bucks)

and I found the fuel pump on the net at something like 3 or 4 different places.

I think what your looking for is as shown in the pictures.

I cross referenced all these numbers with the numbers you listed in your post, and this is what I came up with

Re: Help? Please?

Sorry guys...that's not the correct pump. The gaskets are wrong, I only have one circular diaphragm in mine and I'm told MY pump isn't rebuildable. I guess I'm either gonna have to TRY to find an O.E. # on my pump and cross reference it or attempt to convert it to electric. If anyone can come up with any other ideas or part #'s, please share. Thanks! Again it's a '74 Evinrude 85hp (85493B).

Re: Help? Please?

Really, any old pump will do as long as it mounts up correctly and uses the proper source for the pulse (hose vs. case mount). Use Joe's part #, it's the right one.

The gasket picture isn't correct for the pump listed, either.

Re: Help? Please?

I went through the numbers and Joe and others got it right. The original number was 385784 (Source: Evinrude quick reference guide). It is superceded by 438559 (source: www.ishopmarine.com ) Their price is $80.83.

Re: Help? Please?

Thanks everyone!! I appreciate the xtra effort you all put forward. It definately shows u're all here to help. Sorry if I seeminly exerted attitude about this issue. Just seems to me that no local dealer wants to help or they just want you to buy whatever they have and that's it. I'll try those #'s and see what happens. "Pulse" source is interesting. I DO have 3 ports on my pump, one from fuel tank, 2nd from pump to carbs, and 3rd is a small vacuum hose from pump to block. I'm assuming the 3rd hose is for "pulse" and is based on vacuum from the "intake" stroke of the pistons. Does anyone happen to know what the "flow rate" is for a pump to be considered good? I know that I've taken mine apart and the only thing I really found "wrong" with it was the diaphragm in the rear block part seemed to be deformed. I also found that the outlet check valve chamber (which feeds fuel out to the carbs) was dry. Inlet side was saturated. Is this why this pump has so many superceded part #'s? Seems to me that the diaphragm is pretty flimsy anyway. The fuel bleed down didn't make sense either. Should this pump hold pressure with the engine off? Thanks again for all the help.

Re: Help? Please?

Having gone through this before, you can buy a rebuild kit for the later model pump and use it in the one you've got. You'll need to reuse a couple of the pieces in your existing pump though since the ones in the kit won't fit. But, all the diaphragms and gaskets will work fine.

Re: Help? Please?

why mess around with an outdated piece of equipment, buy a new one and be done with it. go boating. it takes 2 screws, connect 3 lines, and be on the water, well worth the money to me.

Re: Help? Please?

I'm in agreement with TD on this one. I rebuilt the pump, to get back on the water (dealer had the kit in stock) and replaced it with new equipment at the end of the season.

Re: Help? Please?

Ha, ha ha ha ha.....I sure hope u're all in the mood for one hell of a good laugh (even if it is at my own expense). I was just looking at that fuel pump on Ebay again and for some reason, my brain said "study that picture". Well I did and I think I know why my pump isn't getting fuel to the carbs. That filter cover, if u rotate the pic 90 degrees to the left (straight up and down), has the nipple pointing down and to the left. MINE points down and to the right. Hmmmm...interesting predicament. This means that everytime I squeezed my primer bulb, I WAS getting fuel into the pump, but in limited amouts to the INLET check valve and NONE was getting into the OUTLET check valve/chamber cause the filter housing wasn't lined up properly TO BEGIN with.. So simply stated, I was starving the engine for fuel cuz I was too stupid to realize that my filter cover feed nipple wasn't properly lined up with the chamber for the inlet check valve. No wonder the engine wouldn't fire on it's own w/lot LOTS of priming and time. I can hear you all laughing at me now...lol...it's cool . As my caption says , and it's oh so true. "Some of the best lessons in life are the hardest to learn. :D
