OK, put it all back together. Won't shift into reverse. Though did it wrong, disassemble, cables move easily by hand, and gearcase shifts without problem. Put it all back together. Still won't go in reverse. Won't start either

During disassembly, I didn't tough the control box. Not even one screw. This all worked prior to tear down. :( What demon is keeping me from the water??????

Any ideas, I'm stumped. Tried everything short of tearing down the control box. But since I didn't touch it, what can have gone wrong....

Any help is appreciated.

Carl
1978 steury with 175 hp evinrude of same year.

Re: Help, possessed control box???

Thanks for the reply, will try that tomorrow. However, the control box will not shift even with the cables disconnected from the engine. Very odd. I can do it manually unless everything is plugged in, then it won't work. Anyway I'm happy to try any suggestions. I'll let you know what I find.

Thanks, Steury
Carl

Unable to turn the shift rod 180 degrees because of toe. Turned attaching nut 180 degrees to no avail. Control box will not go into reverse. Do I need to tear into this beast in order to find out what is wrong??? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Carl :(

if you have both shift and throttle cable disconnected and can't get control box to go in reverse it sould seem that you need to go in the box......not sure what else it could be.......

Re: Help, possessed control box???

Steury if you have the shift cable off of the shiffting rod at the back of the motor. Can you go to the control box and shift it in all gears? If you can't shift it at the control box you either have a bad shift cable or a bad control box. If you can shift it at the control box go back to the motor and see if you can get all of your gears at the motor, do this by moving the arm that the cable was attached to . If gears seem to be fine there then it has to be in your adjustment on your cable. The cable has a barrel on it and you have to adjust that barrel accordingly to your motor either in or out what will ever give you more reverse.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Nick

Re: Help, possessed control box???

thanks for the reply nickster.

Here is the story, If cables removed from engine, but connected to control box I can't move box. If cables removed from control box but connected to engine I can go through all gears moving cables by hand, but box still will not go in reverse. I've pretty much decided to open the box and look for problems. Its the only place that I have left to check. Any other opions are greatly appreciated, and I'll let you all know how this turns out.

Thanks Carl

Steury your problem is defintely in your control box without question. Now it could be number of things in there worn parts broken parts or just a worn out control box.

Good luck!
Nick

Re: Help, possessed control box???

Tore into it this morning. When cables were removed some how the dentent ball slipped out of place. I rebuilt with a new ball and spring and all works great. Have played with cables to get the right set-up. Started on garden hose, but sounds awfully rough, almost knocking.

I want to take it out on the water, but am concerned over the sound of the engine. I decarbonized it pretty hard when took the heads off and am wondering if I losened something, or it simply needs to be run for a bit to get the oil back into it. Any ideas let me know, and thanks for the reply.

Steury, Carl.
