While attempting to trouble shoot the PT/T on my 1987 200 HP Johnson, I stripped the threads on the manual relief valve. How do I fix this? I have a manual and it does not cover this. Thanks in advance.

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

if you striped the valve itself, the power trim unit will need to be taken apart and have the metal shavings cleaned out of it, then a new valve can be installed, if you striped the internal threads of the housing it will need to be replaced.\

we carry used power trim systems for info email at usedboats4u@aol.com

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

While manually lowering the motor the valve shot out like a bullet. The thread from the housing was still attached to the valve. I thought about putting the valve back in and tapping the outside of the hole and putting a lower unit screw and seal in front of the valve. Will this work? I think my trim motor is shot. It worked fine 2 weeks ago. Any more ideas?

hey hows it going, you may be able to use a helicoil to repair the threads but you still need to take it apart and clean out the metal shavings.

with the amount of labor to clean it out, a bad trim motor and striped threads, i think its time to replace the trim unit..

sorry

What size helicoil would I need for that valve?
How many PSI does it have to contain? This is an odd failure and maybe this has happened to someone else. I am going to trouble shoot the motor itself tonight.

Here is an update. I have 12 volts to the relay box. If you wire the pump straight to the battery, it works. Where else do I need to look?

Check each connection from the wiring diagram for the unit. The diagram is in the shop manual as well as diagrams on how to disassemble/reassemble to get the shavings out (even if you use a helicoil) & pressures.

If I am not mistaken, is'nt that valve held in by a C clip?

I believe this one is threaded. The thread was still attached to the valve when it blew out.

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

Someone tell me if I am understanding my manual. I have 12 volts to the relay box. If someone moves the switch up or down then I should get 12 volts on one of the other leads. If this happens but the motor does not move, I should replace the relays. Thanks in advance.

Did it move either up or down before? If so, swap the relays and see what happens. If it goes in the direction it didn't before, replace relay.

It does not go either way. This leads me to believe it is not the relays but maybe a wire problem some where. BTW my pump is a 2 wire.

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

Going back to the beginning, and manual relief valve. How badly damaged are the threads in the pump housing? This is not just a threaded hole, it also is machined with a seat for the valve. Drilling it out for a heli-coil would destroy this seat. That valve is held in with a snap ring by the way. As for the motor, jump it directly to the battery. That will tell you if the motor is OK. Someone stated earlier they can supply a unit for about $400. If you have a bad housing, and motor both, you can't by a new housing alone for that. Plus you would have to put it together

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

OK I mistook that clip that was still attached to the valve for a thread. Now the valve will go in but will not tighten. I jumped the motor directly to the battery and it works fine. As far as the clip, how do I fix that? The manual does not cover this. I want to fix this motor and run it for probably another year before retiring it for a new 175 so a new trim system is out of the question. I look at the motor like this, when I was 16 I was a problem too.

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

The manual does'nt show it! but as I recall, and bear with me on this. The valve has a outer sleeve with an O-ring around it. The valve itself is threaded inside this sleeve. Back the valve out a couple of turns, and replace it in the pump housing, replace the snap ring, and then try to tighten it. That snap ring has got to be in place. If you have the old snap ring, go to an auto store, and try to match it. Get a snap ring pliers to fit. Get back to us on this.

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

I just found out that valve is 60 bucks. What a joke. I'll be exploring my options.

Re: HELP Power Trim Relief Valve

If you think $60 is high, price the other valves in that system. How did you manage to get your valve out with out removing the snap ring. You said the valve popped out of the pump housing with the snap ring attached. Did you put this valve back with a new snap ring to see if it is OK. If you turned this valve clockwise so tightly that you forced the snap ring out of it's seat when trying to remove the valve, you may not be out of the woods yet. Give me a better discription of just what you did, or was trying to do.
