Help reattaching lower unit West Bend

I have a 1963 7.5hp West Bend. I removed the lower unit to replace the seals but I am have trouble getting it back on. I get it on most of the way with about 2" to spare. I then turn the drive shaft and it seems to line up and drops in another 1" or so but I can't seem to get in the last inch. Any ideas?

Speaking generically;
Sometimes if there is too much grease on or in the crank and drive shaft spline it won't be able to slide together.
