Help! I recently received a 1991 Cobra 18' with a 1991 150hp Force Engine (Blown). My dealer has a brand new 1998 Force 120hp for under $5K installed. Is this a good deal? Is the 1998 120hp Force a good dependable engine? I'm told it doesn't even use oil injection...MIX!!!

What do you all think???

Thanks in advance

Re: Help! Replace a Force with another Force?

Happyzee: No way. I'm a happy 125 Force owner. But I wouldn't pay that kind of money for a Force 120. Mines a 1987 and I took a piston out and the dealer here is rebuilding it complete for $1500. 00. New bearings, seals, pistons and the whole chubang. Did you check and see what they'll rebuild yours for. This dealer thats working on my motor here has a 1996 130 hp johnson that he wants $3400.00 and thats put on the boat. I thought $1500. is alot easier to swollow than $3000. and especially $5000 they want for that Force. Hell I got 15 years on that first power head which he says is real rare. He said force used crappy piston and rings and said they were noted to go but not to be afraid to overhaul it. So I'm going with the overhaul. Just my oppinion. Don't know how deep your pockets are. But think I'd do a little looking around. This guy just got done with a 150 Force. Same price. Good Luck

Happy Zee it just dawned on me that your saying its a brand new motor. Just out of the box and Its four years old. But that also kind of tells me something there. But anyways you can go to www.nada.com and get a price. It looks to me like $2100. to $2600 for the motor plus you'll have installation added on to that. But I'm sure NADA book is figuring its been used. But I guess its up to you of how much more its worth being its new.
But to me once you put it on that boat and you use it that its worth that $2100. to $2600.
Probably really confussing you know. Good Luck!

Having trouble posting correctly. Anyways don't waste $5K on a Forse. Get a decent used OMC, Yamaha, Suzuki exc. A 115 Yamaha will most likely be equivalent in performance to your 150 Force. Also the resale value will be significantly increased without a Force on the back. Rebuilding it will cost more than the motor is worth. Good luck on your decision.

I would look to purchase a brand new 2002 Mercury or something. For a little more money you have a new engine. Shop around I have seen some good deals online.

Happyzee,

There were some good points made on this subject.

$5 G, sounds like a good deal until you think about a couple of things. That engine line is no longer around and it didn't have the best reputation when it was. A lot of that bad rep. was undeserved but, none the less, it's there and it scares people off or reduces the value significantly.

That engine will be worth what the NADA book says it's worth whether it has one hour or 500 hours.

Other brands will hold the value better. Did you look on this site for used engines? I recall seeing at least one 130. A 130 would probably run as strong or stronger than your Force 150.

On a 91 boat I would think twice about having a young expensive engine on it. What was the estinate of the rebuild for the Force 150? With the head off you will get a better idea of what went wrong. Was it well oiled when it blew!

Own a 97 force and though I have had no problems with it I wouldn't recomend it to anyone. It's just a reliablity issue. I would rather have the piece of mind knowing I had a good motor on the back than a few dollars in my pocket. There is no better way of ruining your day than to be out on the water and have engine problems.

happyzee,

There is a "new" 135 Johnson "classic" on this site for sale for $5,995.00. (no sales tax) That engine would do very well on your rig. I think you would be surprised at the performance improvement over the Force 150.

Re: Help! Replace a Force with another Force?

Thanks all for the advise. I kinda felt the same way about a New FORCE, but was putting $$$$ ahead of common sense. Thanks for the reality check. I will pursue getting a "Left Over", i.e., a 1999, 2000 or 2001 Merc, Evenrude and if I can get realllly lucky, a Honda or Yamaha.

Thanks again
