I have a 1988 Johnson 60 J60TLCCR and I figures since we are quarantined because of the corona virus I would tune up the boat. Here was my plan. Sea Foam the carb, New Plugs, Impeller, foot oil. No big deal. While I was in the middle of the seafoam treatment of the engine and carbs the muffs somehow slipped of the water input and my engine started running hot. I suspect it was idling this way for anywhere from 5-10 minutes. I was in the boat but running wires for a new fish finder and checking the pee stream every couple of minutes. I immediately turned it off and dropped the foot the impeller was completely melted to the housing. I ordered a complete pump kit and continued on with the plugs and fuel filter. I then checked the compression and I was getting Top=130 Middle=125 bottom 130. I then decided since I didn't have a water pump yet to connect the water hose directly to the water pump input hose. Water was peeing fine and then I turned it over and it spun once and basically the starter couldn't turn it anymore. I then pulled all the plugs and water started coming out of the bottom cylinder. As this point I pulled all the plugs and turned it over several times to get all the water out. So this is where I am at. Did the over heating cause the problem or forcing water up the input pipe blow a gasket Or was it a combination of both. I guess the bottom line is I have a trip the 1st of May and I have to get it fixed. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Where do I start?
Also Compression after the water in the bottom cylinder is still good. Do I need an exhaust to housing gasket, head gasket and thermostat.

Hard facts for you.------Could be the 3 exhaust manifold gaskets and the head gasket blown.------Some will argue.-----You need to take very quick action to make sure no water got into the crankcase .----Water on precision bearings and polished surfaces will scrap the motor.-----Damage / etching starts in a few hours.----Get the motor running to dry it out or take it apart , your choice.

Any suggestions on getting it running without a water pump? I am afraid the pressure on the hose caused the problem to begin with. Is there another way to tell if water got into the crankcase?

I am going to be blunt.----You have to act on this now.----Run it to dry it out.----No cooling water needed if you idle it a bit for 20 seconds at a time.------Fill the crankcase with oil.-----Do something !-----If there is water in the lower crankcase and you let it sit for a few weeks #%$#$$$$$

OK. I'm going to try and run it now. I guess we are just trying to get it hot enough to evaporate the water.

It ain't going to fix itself. I agree, immediate need is to get the water out. Now, if not sooner. Then replace the head gasket and exhaust cover gaskets. Yes, overheating is what damaged it.

OK I went out and got it running with no water. I would let it run for about 30 seconds and turn it off for a couple of minutes, I did this about 5 or 6 times. After I was done I noticed water seeping from bolts on the exhaust manifold. I did notice an erratic idle. I filmed a few videos. Let me know what you think I should do now. Replace Head gaskets, Exhaust Gaskets, Thermostats? Thanks for all your help.

You are getting it plenty warm I say.-----The bolts on that cover are likely loose.-----Those covers will be warped.----Hopefully those bolts come out without breaking.
