Help!! Salt!

So I purchased a 150 Johnson off Ebay, it arrives looks good until I open the cover then I notice rust on the bolts, and the motor is frozen. It's obvious this was not a freshwater only motor. I'm taking it up with the seller and Ebay, but if I'm stuck with this beast, where do I start? What needs to be pulled apart and cleaned if there's any hope of it running?

Re: Help!! Salt!

Pull the spark plugs and shoot some WD-40 into each cylinder. After a week soak, try to turn her through with a wrench on the flywheel nut.

Rust is not proof of salt; just strong evidence.

Good luck. :)

True, but there were some other issues, like the motor was advertised a running motor, which there's no way in its current state that it is.
Anyway live and learn, I'll give the WD-40 a shot.

Re: Help!! Salt!

I assume a thorough flushing and a new impeller would also be in order (assuming it turns?)

Re: Help!! Salt!

I would suggest Marvel Mystery oil rather than WD40.

What about trying SeaFoam Deep Creep? It seems to be the best thing since sliced bread.

Mike

envy,

I do not know how hard you tried to turn it over. Remember, a stuck water pump impeller will make it VERY difficult to turn over by hand. Eliminate the water pump (lower unit)before you condemn the powerhead.

Three big guys tried turning the prop and it wouldn't budge with the motor in forward. I'll pull out the impeller as a matter of course and give it another shot.

envy - Three guys turning the prop ain't gonna do it. Pull the plugs. Squirt in some Marvel Mystery oil. Let sit for a coup[le of days. Put it in neutral. Put a breaker bar or a long handle 1/2" socket wrench on the big nut on top of the flywheel and give it a yank.

Re: Help!! Salt!

while salt is a factor- the thing that would concern me is lack of maintenance-out here all outboards are used in salt water- but they need flushing ,and greese liberally applied on areas that will rust.

Re: Help!! Salt!

Trying to turn over an engine with the propeller is like trying to turn over a car engine with the brake disc in 5th gear. Do what the guys above said use the flywheel and a breaker bar and socket.

Re: Help!! Salt!

Well my anger was misplaced, when I notified the seller he apologized and offered the exact same advice, even called me on the phone to walk me through it. Turning the prop was what a local mechanic tried to do before telling me the motor was garbage and he could sell me a new one. I'll keep you posted as I think this could turn into a great winter project. (dumpy runabout becomes sleek wakeboarding monster!)

Re: Help!! Salt!

The local Johnson mechanics are another story (I've got a post on rude mechanics thread...) but Murphy's Mystery Oil did the trick. The starter turns it no problem now. Thanks!!
New question: there's a lot of oil now in the cylinders, will it just burn out, or should I spray in a little 50:1 into the cylinders? Also, should I try get it to fire with the old plugs, which are in sorry shape and let them get fouled with the stuff I sprayed in, or get new plugs and clean them off after its running?

Re: Help!! Salt!

New plugs won't hurt. Either the old ones or new should burn off any extra oil in the cylinders. Make sure when you try to start the thing that you have the muffs on with water turned on.
