I have a 1967, 60 H.P., V4, Evinrude sportfour. Model 60753A serial E05224.
A bit of history to help understand the prob. I am the third owner and know the person that bought it new, he unfortunatly let it sit for years and it suffered. My father (the second owner) and i have put a great deal of work starting with a compression test which it past with flying colors (water pump, points, condenser, fuel lines and pump, filter, coil, plugs and wires, rotor all new) It runs like a dream, just not quickly or at a high rpm. When i throttle up its as if the engine bogs down. There's just no power. I can choke the engine at anytime and there is no difference in it. As far as i know it should kill the engine , but like i said it doesnt change anything  .I'm wondering if i pull the carbs and clean them all up really good if that could help the problem? Also i'm not sure what the reed valve does. Would that contribute to my power loss? Or am i not even in the right direction? Please experts show the the way! I appreciate any help.

sounds to me like your choke might be stuck open, but you should get a second opinion from someone who knows more than me........good luck though.

well if it's still running and you physically see the choke closed then the motor is running lean, and the carbs definitely need to be pulled and completely cleaned, soaked, all passages blown out, and overhauled with carb kits (two kits, one for each carb)

It's not a monumental task....

Thanks for the advice.I do see the choke close, both with the electric and then i went back and actually pulled it close. The moter runnning lean, is that because of the carbs needing cleaned or is that an adjustment on the carb itself. Also what should i soak the carbs in and for about how long do you think?

Re: Help! Serious lack of power!

*UPDATE*

I pulled off my carbs and have it mostly torn apart b ut ran into a snag when i was trying to take out the float pin's seat. The blot just chips away when i try and use the screwdriver and i still cant move it, then i tried some pliers and couldnt move it with those either. My book says i dont have to worry about saving it because it will be replaced in a kit, but i cant even get it out! any thooughts?

Make sure you use the right size screwdriver. If you are using a smaller than needed one you will chip away at the mating surface. Mine was real stuck when I first rebuilt them as well, I went to a larger slotted screwdriver, came right out at that point.

that's what happened and by the time i found the larger one the damage was done and i could not get it to move, i then went on to more brutal tactics and used pliers which caused frustration and finaly a drill, the threads are ok though, i just have to use a tap to get the brass out from in between them.

Re: Help! Serious lack of power!

I finished cleaning and rebuileding the carbs, aside from the float pin mis hap(of which worked wonderfully after tapping new threads) i got all done and found parts for the fule pump, like the filter and a seal so i went to put those one ehn i noticed oil in my vacuum line. first thought was the diaphram in the pump but it was just replaced and i checked again to make sure there were no rips. the oil wasnt gas and oil either, just black oil. any thoughts?

is there anyway that gas in a tank would be burned and not the oil? i didnt think there was but i'm not sure. I dont know what the black oily substance is that i found in my vacuum line or where it came from.

If your gas and oil was mixed it will not separate in a short time. It will burn together if it gets there together.

i know it was mixed, i shook the crud out of it. i dont know what it was but it doesnt seem to be there when the engine is running, that was the dirst and only time i had seen it, that's not to say that it isnt still there.
