Hi,

Well, it's time for me to start learning about the procedure for servicing the center bowl carbs on my Merc 85 #4721196.

(1) Can I (should I...) remove both carbs together with the linkages intact?

(2) Should I buy the "Carb Rebuild Kit" $52.00... or do you think I should just need the gasket kit ($2.50...) What's in the larger kit?????

(3) Anyone seen a step-by-step on the web anywhere for these carbs? I have a Clymer manual...it's OK...but it might be good for me top have more detailed pictures..

Thanks guys...I'll post more questions as I think of them...

Chuck

You probably just need a set of gaskets. Remove the linkages (the cotter pins), remove all fuel hoses, and then remove the retaining nuts that fasten the carbs to the intake manifold.

-Get the carb cleaner you can purchase by the gallon (Napa Auto parts sells it), not the spray stuff. Disassemble the carbs, and soak bowls, throats, jets and jet plugs (I mean soak em' in a bucket with carb cleaner so they are fully submerged into the cleaner), throw away the old gaskets, rinse the carbs in water (watch out the carb cleaner is harsh on the hands), both compressed air through every little opening to remove excess debris and to get the parts fully fully dry. Then reassemble with the new gaskets.

-Hope this helps, drop a question if need be
andy

Disassemble the carbs, and ""soak bowls"", throats, jets and jet plugs (I mean soak em' in a bucket with carb cleaner so they are fully submerged into the cleaner),

Ok...thanks...

Will removing the linkages upset the synch settings? It's hard for me to tell if it all will go back together only one way...of if those connections have built-in adjustments....

The type of chemical recommended for carb cleaning (or soaking) seems to vary depending on who you talk to.

I remember seeing another post which said to be careful of the brand of "dunk 'em in and let 'em soak" type of cleaners because they can etch the surface of the metal.

The NAPA stuff is OK though?

Oh yeah...that reminds me...do all NAPA dealers have access to the boat stuff....even if they only stock automotive parts?

Thanks again, Chuck

The stuff Napa sells is fine for the carbs on your outboard. Around here it is what most of the local shops use. As far as the linkages are concerned...all you need to do is remove the throttle linkage connecting the carbs. Even if you took the springs off the carbs...just set them so the throttle shutters are completely closed at idle and wide open at full throttle.

-andy
