Help setting timing 1988 3.0 mercrusiser

Have a 1988 maxum with mercrusier 3.0 and am confused as to timing procedure. The distributor is not the newer electronic one Are there wires that need to be jumped to get it to base timing and what is the correct timing setting.
The boat starts and runs, but runs hot and bogs down when you give it gas

If you just have a points ignition, simply hook your timing light to the #1 cylinder wire, and set the timing.

Sounds to me like you're running lean, but it could be a timing issue.
