This beauty came as part of the purchase of a 1972 Avon Redseal.
Both the inflatable and the motor appear flawless.

Amazingly, after draining out gasoline, vintage 2004, the tank was refilled and started after a few pulls. But the cord would not retract.

The motor serial number reads 2302 B E0001910

Foolishly, I released the screw that runs through the roof of the cowl and PING! One end of the spring has about a 60 degree bend in it.

Should I attempt to coil the spring and return it to its proper position? If so, how? I have not a clue. The motor probably dates from the 1970s...would there be any source for a replacement spring?

Any ideas would be welcome.

take it to a shop if you have never done one. they have a tendency to go boing while trying to recoil the spring. it is a dangerous feat, if you have not done it.

If you do try it, wear goggles and gloves.

Gloves are a good idea because the darn thing is probable greasy. I did the same thing today while pulling a 1976 apart that I just bought. It took some patience but I got it after about an hour. I only recommend taking it to the shop after you have tried to repair it yourself.

Mine had the same bend, it fits into the pull-start, the other end into the cowl.
