Help - Starting procedure with primer

I have a 25hp Evinrude, rope start and manual primer. I have been having a headache starting this motor while cold (it floods) and after going through everything, the motor is nicely dialed in now but I still the same problem starting while cold.
I'm now figuring that my start-up procedure with the primer is wrong. How many times should I pump it? Should it be pushed all the way in when I try to start (while I'm pulling like mad it seems to start more often in this spot than any other location) or left at some other spot?
The little drawing beside the primer knob shows all the way in and a little 'no spark' drawing, half way out and then all the way out with a 'spark' drawing.
Help!!

Sean

Hi Sean
Pump the primer bulb until firm. Turn throtle control to start. Pull primer pump all the way out at least once maybe twice. You can feel and or hear if you are getting a full pump. One to one and a half good pumps should do. I fully close my primer then pull the rope. After the engine starts you may pull the primer out one notch. This is the warm-up position. Be sure to fully close it before you take off.

Thanks, Alcan, for the info. When I pulled my carb off I tested out the fuel lines to the primer to see exactly how it works and the procedure that you described fits with what what I thought I should do.
The thing that keeps tripping me up is that the drawing beside the primer shows no spark when it's closed... but with mine that is the only time that fuel can't flow from the bowl, through the primer and into the carb so it sure seems to me like the primer has to be all the way in. I'll try this out next time I take the boat out.

Sean

Those international symbols, what a joke. When I went to school, they taught us to read. How is anyone supposed to understand that mess. I work with all types of small and heavy equiptment. The only thing I can tell for sure is when a light and/or buzzer go off something ain't right. I have to have an operators manual in order to figure out what them stupid symbols mean.
