Hey folks,

Alright its a 72' Mercury 650 65hp 2cycle with thunderbolt ignition,

Just trying to get my lower unit seal by the prop changed, I've taken off the prop and the thrust plate that the prop sits against. Now I can see there is a ring with teeth that threads against the outside of the housing; however, mine only turns about 1 inch along the circumfurence until it comes to a hard stop (but there are threads all the way out the housing). Should I be trying to fully thread it out in order to get the seal/bearing holder to come out ? Or does it only turn that little bit ? Just wanting to make sure before I try to get it to turn it any more.

Here is a picture of what I'm talking about (click to enlarge):

Btw, posting 'take it to the dealer/mech/etc' replies wouldn't be of any help; since, if I could do that I wouldn't be posting here. Thanks!

Look closer between the teeth on the nut....under the nut there's a tab washer with one or more tabs bent to lock the nut...

Bend away those tabs and unscrew the nut.

Thanks so much, I found exactly what you were talking about and managed to get everything out that was in front of the bearing/seal carrier.

Now I got to the bearing/seal carrier, from the assembly picture it looks like it threads in there, is that correct ?

This is the piece I am talking about (click to enlarge):

I've tried spinning it and I can't get it to budge!

Threads are only for the nut you have removed, the carrier itself can now be pulled straight out....in theory .

In the real lift you might need to use a slide hammer, or some sort of puller ...
Whatever you do...DO NOT BEND against the edge on the case itself, it will brake ..

Fasten the slide hammer to the propeller shaft and knock it out ( propshaft will push the carrier out in front ).

If it's very corroded you might need stronger tools or a more persuasive way to get it out :)

Hey, thanks alot for your help, I just got it all back together with new seals, your help did alot of good in the process!

Now one final question for anyone that can answer this, what do I torque the prop nut to ?

I found 55ft/lbs for solid mounted hub, and 100ft/lbs for flotorq hubs, although i've learned many lessons in life how assuming is a bad idea, yet I assume I have a solid mount hub ?
