I have been trying to get the motor to lower with the trim switch but the pistons on the trim were all stuck. I removed the cap like I saw on another thread and let it sit for awhile. I came back and tried it again. The trim motor worked in both directions and I let it down a bit, came up a little to see that it worked in both directions and it did. I went and let the motor down till it sat on the lower pistons and tried to move the motor back up to make sure it worked in different degrees but absolutely no electrical power was being sent to make it go back up a little. It would continue to lower with the switch but wouldnt work in the upper. can you give me a hand with this. Also, I have been looking for what type of oil to use for this early 1990's model 90hp Evinrude.

Re: Tilt and trim

Re: Tilt and trim

I first, hooked up the battery and tried the trim switch on both the motor and hand control in both directions, the motor made noise but did not move the engine either direction. After I had removed the fill plug and let the motor sit for awhile. I then used the trim switch again and it started moving in the down direction first. I immediately went in the up direction and the engine moved up. I did this again and it worked so I let the motor almost all the way down before I tried to raise it a little, at this point the trim motor did not make any noise in the up position but made noise in the down position.

Re: HELP Tilt and trim 90hp

I just got the boat and replaced all the electrical leads to the battery and the trim motor was energinzed in the up and down position on both the motor and throttle trim switches, I worked them a little before the up didnt work anymore. the up position will not energize at this moment but the down will.

swap the positions of the solenoids in the tilt control box. if it goes up, then you know one of the solenoids are bad. have you check fluid levels?

Trim & Tilt

With someone?s help push the up button, and someone help the motor go all the way up. Lock motor in that position, now fill reservoir, replace cap. Unlock and bush button to lower motor. Keep repeating until it does not take fluid. The unit should operate now. Dextron II or power steering fluid.

cap on. cap off it does not build up pressure, in the system.

The motor is OK and the relays are OK, so you either have air in the system, a wiring issue, or the switch is bad.

Do you have a second switch at the engine? If so, does it work?

When you add fluid, the motor needs to be fully tilted and supported with the trail lock. Fill until the fluid runs out. If the boat is on a trailer, it should be on level ground. Close the cap tightly, release the trail lock and cycle the motor up and down several time, help it move if needed.

Repeat the process several times.

If the relay does not click when pressing the switch in both directions, disconnect the battery and confirm that the switch is working using an ohmmeter at the relay box.

yep, i'm on my way to get a decent ohm meter and I may have air in the system. When I let the motor down the first time I thought I read to 'take cap off'. But still, wouldnt the trim up switch at the engine still work? I rechecked the relays and the down works on both relays. Up wont make a noise, no click.

just reading, i'm not making much sense of the wiring diagram from the book. It's in black and white with no hash mark reference on the wires.

I've got the meter to measure with. what should I check first?
