I have a 96 johnson 50 hp I was checking it out the other day after replacing the fuel lines. it started out fine ran for 20 min no prob. Today started, ran for a few minutes at idle when it was tilted up, tilted it down and when i did started blowing a lot more smoke. kept running though. I throttled it up a little for about a min. When i idled down it didnt respond actually started revving up and was revving fast. turned key off nothing happened it kept running fast as well. disconnected battery fuel etc finally got it shut down. Any ideas on what is caused this? Time to rebuild the carbs?

I would do that first and then I would check your ignition switch.

H2O Dog,

Excess carbon build up in the combustion chambers will cause this. The glowing carbon acts as a spark plug. I would decarb. the engine. Use the search feature on this board using the keyword "decarb".
